Sony in 1998 revealed their memory card variant, the Memory Stick (MS). Since then, the company has come out with a number of variations that run off this basic technology and provide users with the data transfer options they need, all in a small, external card. Transferring the contents of these cards to a computer is not a difficult task, although there are a few steps to keep in mind as there are a couple of different routes to take.

Feb 29, 2008  I have a HP laptop and i'm trying to get my Sony Pro Stick Duo into my laptop but the slot looks and seems too big and i don't want to chance losing my chip. How do you get the chip into the laptop? Is there a specific unit i have to buy at Best Buy or a Staples or something? The slot on my computer says SD MS/ Pro MMC XD.if that means anything to somebody.

Step 1

Examine your computer and its different ports. This will be necessary to determine Sony Memory Stick compatibility. Some computers, as well as other electronic devices, come equipped with card readers automatically. However, the kind of Memory Stick you have (such as a Memory Stick Pro Duo, for example) may not be directly compatible with your computer. It is best to have this knowledge in hand one way or another from the beginning.

  1. First, please make sure your card reader has the right slot. Sony memory cards are 'Memory Stick Pro', or M2, as most call them. They do not fit in SD card slots (as they are a bit thinner) and need a card reader with a specific slot.
  2. S8-bit parallel data transfer can be supported when “Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo” is used. System Requirements. Insert a memory card into the slot on the reader/writer. When inserting a card, push it in as far as it can go. Notes. Insert only one memory card into the slot. Do not insert.
  3. MY HP laptop is a HP Pavilion, product #T0E02UAR and the Sony memory stick is a 4GB memory stick PRO Duo, Magic Gate, Mark2 and the camera is a Sony Cyber-shot, model DSC-H20. As I stated in my original post the Sony sd card fits and downloads on my HP Envy 750-055xt desk top and it has the same sd slot as my HP Pavilion laptop.

Step 2

Eject the Sony Memory Stick from your device. If your computer has a compatible card reader, simply insert the stick carefully into the reader.

Step 3

Navigate around your desktop. Under the 'My Computer' option on your PC, you will find the option to click on the Memory Stick device and access the photo contents. You may download them to your computer for storage and later perusal. Do not sever the connection/remove the Sony Memory Stick until all contents are downloaded. If you wish to stop downloading at any time, do not jerk out the stick-instead, be sure to cancel the transfer via the onscreen instructions first.

Step 4

Consider purchasing an external memory card reader for your computer if your device does not have a built in, internal card reader option that supports the Sony Memory Stick, and the above steps are not possible. A number of external card readers can be bought for your Mac or PC that allow reading of Sony cards in a quick and simple process via the USB 2.0 standard (see Resources below).

Step 5

Install the new memory card reader to your computer. To use the memory card reader, make sure to install any discs/drivers that come with the hardware, following the Auto Install Wizard that should pop up when your computer recognizes the new device and loads the disc via your drive. Restart your computer, and then plug the USB wire leading from the external reader into one of your computer's USB ports. Then, Sony Memory Stick transfers will be possible via this device simply by extracting it from your camera or cell phone unit and placing it inside the external reader until it clicks snugly into place.

In 2005, Sony released the PlayStation Portable hand-held game console in North America. The console allows users to play games, view pictures, listen to music and watch movie files that are stored on the PSP's Memory Stick Pro Duo. The PSP 1000, PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 are only compatible with the Sony-introduced Memory Stick Pro Duo but, with one in hand, users can install it into their PSP system in a matter of minutes.

Supported Memory Sticks

The PSP supports the Memory Stick Pro Duo flash media format. Memory Stick Pro Duos come in a variety of storage capacities, ranging from 32 megabytes to 32 gigabytes. With the exception of the PSP GO, all PSP models are compatible only with the Memory Stick Pro Duo format, meaning no other type of memory card can be inserted into the PSP system.

Inserting the Memory Stick Pro Duo

The Memory Stick slot is located on the bottom-left edge of the PSP system. To open the Memory Stick slot cover, insert a fingernail or other small, flat object into the notch in the Memory Stick slot cover, and pull the slot cover out and away from the system. Insert the cropped edge of the Memory Stick Pro Duo into the PSP system with the lettered side facing up, and push the Memory Stick into place. Close the slot cover to conceal the Memory Stick.

Formatting the Memory Stick

To successfully install and use a Memory Stick Pro Duo with a PSP system, you must format it. Insert the Memory Stick, turn on the PSP unit and scroll over to the 'Settings' section of the XrossMediaBar. Scroll down to the 'System Settings' section, press the 'X' button, and then scroll down to the 'Format Memory Stick' option and press the 'X' button. When prompted, confirm that you wish to format the Memory Stick. Allow several minutes for the formatting process to finish.

When upgrading or changing the Memory Stick, the removal process is similar to the installation process. Pry open the Memory Stick slot cover and gently press the Memory Stick further into the slot. The slot's spring mechanism will eject the Memory Stick from the PSP system for easy removal. Pull the Memory Stick out of the PSP system, insert a new one if necessary and close the slot cover.
