Double Down In Blackjack Mean
You will make more money when the dealer is showing a card that will allow you to double down, however, you must follow the rules of basic strategy. Many novice players will double down with a hand of 7 or 8 against a dealer showing an up card of 5 or 6. Winning at blackjack requires taking advantage of every opportunity the game offers, and one of the most favorable situations for the player is the double down. When you double down, you get to double your original wager in exchange for a single card. Most casinos allow you to double down on any two cards, while some casinos limit your doubling.
My best advice as to the correct play is not to double, but to hit the hand.
Look - having the eight is really not a strong enough hand to be doubling on. Remember that the average dealer hand comes out to a value of 18.23. So as far as a winning hand is concerned, you're holding something that is actually less than average.
Also remember that even with a six as his upcard, the dealer will only bust about 43% of the time. So your positive yield for doubling is minimal since you're only going to win 4% more than you lose.
On the other hand, when you hit the eight, you'll win nine more hands than you lose, per hundred. So your gain with simply hitting is slightly greater than if you executed a double-down.

Free Double Down Blackjack
I told him that should be Double Down. So I asked him where he got the strategy card and he said it was from his mentor (an ex-player on the MIT blackjack team); someone with a greek name like 'petropolous' or 'petrolopous'
This man didn't seem to know that much and wasn't not jumping his bets according to the count so I doubt he was really able to count.
Any ideas why his strategy card or his mentor would have him STAND instead of double down on A,8 vs. dealer 6?
Anyway, I told him mine was correct and that I even had an argument with a dealer once who told me I was not suppose to double down A,8 against dealer 6. I told the dealer it was basic strategy, so the dealer asked the pit boss who was right. The pit boss did not know off hand, but had a strategy card in his pocket and looked at it and sure enough I was right. The pit boss 'I better keep my eye on you, you know your basic strategy too well..wink, wink.'
